CHLOE

I was worried that today would be awkward. That Austin would regret everything and want me out as quickly as possible. Hell, I still feel like I’m doing something wrong just by being here.

Thank God Austin doesn’t feel the same. “Morning, gorgeous,” he says, glancing over the rim of his coffee as I stifle a yawn and wander out of the bedroom. “Caffeine.” His finger points to a second steaming mug on the kitchen counter, and I scoop it up eagerly. The dark liquid is like rocket fuel, but I’m going to need it. My legs are still weak as I round the counter and take a seat on a stool by the counter.

“Good morning,” I say, glancing back at him over my own mug. “Guess I’ll need this for the rest of the hike, huh?”

He shakes his head. “I wasn’t about to make you walk another hour into town.” Setting his cup down, Austin rounds the counter and plants a kiss on my head. It stirs up some mixed emotions. It’s not that I was expecting a one-night stand or anything like that, but honestly, I’m not sure exactly what this is.

But damn, does it feel good to see Austin’s face looking so calm and relaxed this morning. “What do you mean? I thought you didn’t have a car?”

“I don’t. I took a quick hike into town and spoke to one of my guys. Fetched a fan belt, too. Your car’s already by the road a little way from here, and it’s good as new.”

I squeal and throw my arms around Austin. “Thank you, so much.” But my stupid brain goes into overdrive. Was the hike JUST for my car or something else? I push the thoughts away quickly, easing out of Austin’s grip. It’s none of my business anyway. Though, it does raise questions about last night. “Well, I guess I’d better get going then … we’ve got a whole truckload of equipment and materials arriving today. The contractors are coming in later, too. That place needs turning from a mechanic’s workshop into a photography studio.”

After making myself look more presentable, Austin walks me the five minutes or so that it takes to reach the road from his lodge. And sure enough, my car’s sitting by the side of the road waiting for me. “Thanks again, really.”

“It’s no trouble,” he says, his eyes skirting the ground as he rubs a hand across his neck. “Don’t be a stranger.” He spins on his heels, cursing something I can’t hear and sighing heavily. The poor guy is a bag of nerves, and while it’s not normally my kind of thing, I’ve just an overwhelming urge to protect this guy from himself.

“I feel like we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other,” I say, climbing into my car and firing up the engine. This seems to put him at ease. Those cheeks dimple up again as he waves me off.

The drive into Pink Ridge takes about another fifteen minutes or so, though it’s changed a lot since I left.
